Dr. Heike Asseburg, Ph.D.


Heike Asseburg holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in nutritional science. For her Ph.D. she is currently doing research on the preventive effects of bilberry polyphenols on mitochondrial dysfunction as key factor of brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the nutritional neuroscience study group in close cooperation with Dr. Clemens Kunz, human nutriton, Universtiy of Giessen. For her research she uses neuronal cell models and mouse models of aging and AD as well as human lymphocytes as peripheral model of mitochondrial dysfunction.

Awards: Poster prize award of the international society for neurochemistry. Awarded in Singapore frame of the satellite meeting „Nutraceuticals in Neurodegeneration and Aging“ to the 25th  ISN-13th ASPN Bienal Meeting, Cairns 2016. 

Methods: Measurement of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and ATP levels, High Resolution Respirometry (Oxygraph-2k), Assessment of mitochondrial swelling (opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore), Behavior tests.
